golf clubs are under threat
Golf Clubs typically lack the knowhow and resources to have their own inhouse security team, and their employees often have very little cyber awareness, making them prime targets for social engineering attacks.
95% of Cyber-incidents occur because of human error. Lack of cyber awareness is the primary cause. SMEs in the UK are targeted by ~65,000 cyber-attacks a day, 4,500 of which are successful. This means an SME is breached every 19 seconds. 85% of SMEs that suffer a cyber-incident never find out they have been breached.
In the past few years two of the largest golf clubs in the country have been hit with major cyber-attacks. One had £300k stolen from their club accounts whilst the other had the details of 4000 members stolen, and it took them a month to detect
Risks
Golf Club members are often very wealthy individuals, their personal details would be valuable to hackers who would seek to take them and sell them on to scam call centres.
The financial penalties that can occur because of a cyber-incident can be devastating to a Golf Club. Financial penalties can come in a variety of forms each as impactful as the last:
- Cyber attacks
- Scammer attacks
- Regulatory Fines
- Compensation claims and class actions
- Business Continuity Interruption
- Reputational Damage

The SGCMA is the professional Association for managers of Scottish Golf and Sports Clubs. The objectives of the Association are to improve the management of clubs through education, peer networking, assistance and support of club officers.

Scottish Golf is the governing body for amateur golf in Scotland. It was formed in 2015 as a merger between the Scottish Golf Union, the governing body for men, and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, the equivalent body for women. Its predecessor the SGU was established in 1920, and it is based in St Andrews, Fife. It is affiliated to The R&A, which is also based at St Andrews, and is responsible for administering the Rules of Golf, as laid down by The R&A, at the national level. Scottish Golf organises tournaments, manages Scotland’s national teams, and promotes the game, for example by lobbying governments.

Testimonials

“In recent years we have become very aware of the threat of cyber attacks and as such employed the services of Cyber Mulligan, who we became aware of at a GCMA conference last year. The team at Cyber Mulligan have offered a comprehensive service which gives us peace of mind knowing we have reduced the risk as much as possible of any potential threat.
The training has been excellent, easy to access for all staff and can also be made available for Board and committee members.”
Danny Welsh | General Manager | Glasgow Golf Club

“Over recent years, I have become increasingly aware and concerned about the risk of a cyber-attack. Indeed, it was only due to the vigilance of our accounts team at Accountancy Matters that we were not subject to one ourselves. For this reason, I was very interested in speaking with the team at Cyber Mulligan when they were exhibiting at the GCMA Conference last year. Despite having adequate cyber-attack insurance, we were keen to protect ourselves and avoid any unfortunate situation. The installation across all of our devices was very smooth and easy, and the training my team, Board and members have and will continue to receive has been easily accessed and excellent.”
– Chris Lomas, Worplesdon Golf Club Secretary

Knowing how real the risks now are of cyber-attacks, we were eager to take proactive steps to protect the club and the members, whom we have a duty of care to. We were introduced to Cyber Mulligan at one of the intelligentgolf webinars. Despite having cyber insurance, it is essential to prevent issues before they happen. The Cyber Mulligan team made the entire process seamless; from installation across all our devices to the comprehensive training provided to our team. The training has been excellent, easily accessible, and will be an ongoing resource for us. I highly recommend Cyber Mulligan for their expertise and exceptional service. Cybersecurity is now as important as always locking your front door!
Kris Bezzant – Director
Southwick Park Golf Club

“Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club employed the services of Cyber Mulligan in the summer of 2024. The Club was aware of the risks of poor cyber security and was keen to increase its protection across its IT infrastructure. Cyber Mulligan offered a comprehensive service for ensuring that devices were provided with corporate-level protection and 24-hour monitoring.
Knowing that human error is the most typical cause of a cyber breach, the Club was keen to utilise Cyber Mulligan’s Cyber Awareness Training. A training programme is now in place for all staff who have access to the IT system, teaching best practice and how to spot potential threats. Training is also accessible for the Club’s Board and advice bulletins are available to the wider membership. That Cyber Mulligan provide advice in the event of a cyber breach gives the Club even more peace of mind, too.”
